stroke and brain injury rehabilitation

In addition to coordinating therapies and developing individualized plans for stroke victims, other treatments are available. If tightness has developed post-stroke, or patients have continued problems with walking, coordination, or concentration, certain medications can be given to treat increased tone. Our physicians also assist with lifestyle and dietary changes to cut back on risk of suffering a repeat stroke. Patients who experience a stroke or traumatic brain injury may also have continued cognitive issues or difficulty with speaking and swallowing, requiring ongoing care and intervention.

Some patients suffer severe brain injuries, requiring someone to coordinate care after being discharged from the hospital setting. Sometimes these injuries can be life altering and require interventions that may be ongoing for years.  Oftentimes the patient needs more than what their Primary Care Physician is trained to provide. Brain injuries can be mild or severe. We provide cognitive assessments to assist each individual case with treatment for those patients who feel they are just not quite what they used to be. Patients who have experienced a brain injury may also experience headaches or dizziness, which our physicians have been trained to improve.

low intensity extracorporeal shockwave treatment of muscular & skeletal disorders

Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy, or Li-ESWT, is a treatment that has been used for wound healing and the improvement of bone fractures and damaged tendons and ligaments.  This treatment aims to help speed up the recovery time and restore mobility to the affected area. The treatment is multidisciplinary and is used in practice to treat a wide number of problems, from sports medicine and orthopedics, to urological dysfunction.

regenerative injections/ prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is an injection of any substance that promotes growth of normal cells, tissues, or organs. Prolotherapy generates an inflammatory process in the body, causing the production of fibroblasts, leading to new tissue fibers to repair an injury. The process stabilizes the affected area while decreasing pain and increasing overall function and stability.

In recent years, PRP therapy has been used to treat damaged tendons, muscle pains, chronic pain, arthritis, joint pain and more. The use of concentrated growth factors stimulates repair in the tissue to regenerate damaged joints as well as ligaments. PRP is a small concentration of growth factors and platelets created from a small sample of blood taken from the patient. A small amount of blood is harvested from the patient, and spun down to separate the blood from the plasma. When the plasma has been separated, it is injected back into the patient. This process allows the injured tendon or joint to heal itself with the help of its own blood. The injections aid and enhance the healing process of injuries such as rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow, and knee osteoarthritis. Not all PRP is the same, some systems have been shown to be more effective at concentrating platelets than others. In some settings, white blood cells may be more beneficial while other times, white blood cells would ideally be limited in the specific PRP treatment.

Exosome therapy is a minimally invasive procedure commonly used to treat orthopedic injuries and degenerative diseases. It is also commonly used in anti-aging practices. Exosomes treatment contains growth factors, messenger RNA, micro RNA, cytokines and other biologically active molecules in conjunction with stem cell therapy to speed up the body’s healing process. Exosome therapy is used to treat an array of problems, from arthritis to hair loss. Recently Exosomes have been found to be extremely anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce pain and inflammation.

NON-SURGICAL ARTHRITIS CARE

Joint replacement surgery is often thought to be the first treatment for arthritis related problems, but it is important to acknowledge surgery is not your only option. At Action PM&R, we offer custom treatment plans for each patient and the severity of their immobility and pain. Home exercises, anti-inflammatory dietary counseling, and therapeutic referrals are all part of our non-surgical treatment plan to preserve the joints without needing surgery.
